Revenue Recognition Manager (Controller Track)

Reporting to the Corporate Controller, the Revenue Recognition Manager will oversee the full revenue accounting cycle ranging from contract review and revenue recognition assessment to customer invoicing and collections as well as oversee any technical accounting research and new accounting standards implementation. This position will be hands on, developing one team member and tightening up the revenue close timetable and processes. Interaction and coordination with colleagues in FP&A, Legal, Sales and various other departments across the Company to ensure proper accounting treatment and accurate financial results while also maintaining effective internal controls is critical. The Revenue Recognition Manager will play a key leadership role in the accounting organization around process improvement, system implementations and optimizations, standardizing processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain Hearsay’s revenue recognition policies and procedures under ASC 606. 
  • Owns the SSP analysis, and documentation of revenue technical accounting positions.  
  • Support deal negotiations by providing input on transaction structures to align contract terms and business objectives, as well as reviewing significant revenue related agreements to guide appropriate accounting
  • Own monthly revenue close procedures and related areas, ensuring accurate results are delivered on time for reporting in accordance with US GAAP.
  • Provide oversight and review of accounts receivable operations, including customer invoicing and collections; define and monitor AR KPIs.
  • Manage and monitor sales taxes, franchise taxes, and other corporate taxes, working closely with tax advisors to ensure reporting and compliance is in place.  Work with tax advisors on support for tax provisions, and other tax filings for US and international subsidiaries.
  • Partner cross functionally with sales operations, legal, finance and professional services team in developing system flows and integrations for the order to cash process, with a focus on revenue recognition data.
  • Ensure reporting and practices around costs to obtain contracts, capitalization of internal use software, stock-based compensation, and others as needed are in compliance with relevant accounting standards.  
  • Develop and maintain internal control documentation, drive the identification of inefficiencies and opportunities for process improvements, optimize ERP and other systems impacting the order to cash cycle, and help lead the implementation of best practices for revenue accounting to scale the team. 
  • Serve as the key liaison with external auditors.  Manage the PBC list and delegate to appropriate team members of the accounting team as well as other cross-functional departments as needed.
  • Assist in managing the monthly close process and reconciliations.
  • Own resolution of accounting questions/issues including adoption of new accounting standards as necessary. Help develop the accounting team and support their growth and professional development.
  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Accounting or Finance
  • Certified Public Accountant credentials required.
  • 8 to 10 years of overall experience, at least 4 years of order to cash or revenue accounting experience, at least 2 years in a software or SaaS revenue accounting role, and prior public accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience with major ERP and other systems, NetSuite Advance Revenue Management, SalesForce, Avalara is a plus. 
  • Extensive knowledge of ASC 606.  Strong analytical and solid accounting technical skills, including ability to independently analyze transactions and contracts and document the related accounting analysis under GAAP.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with ability to work across many departments; ability to work with teams across different time zones.
