CEO LinkedIn Profiles: 5 Important Considerations

Data from CEO.com’s 2015 CEO Report indicates that 61 percent of CEOs do not have a presence on social media. In today’s age where more and more customers and prospects begin their research online, these CEOs are missing out on a huge opportunity to increase brand awareness and influence purchase decisions.
Of those CEOs who are on social, 70 percent have a profile on LinkedIn – which makes sense, given the business-focused nature of the LinkedIn community.
However, there are a few unique issues to consider when a company CEO is present and active on social, including LinkedIn. Mark Middlebrook, head of interactive marketing at City National Bank, recently developed a best practices guide that outlines five important considerations for CEOs and their support staff when establishing and maintaining a LinkedIn presence:
1) Establish Rules for Correspondence
Once the CEO is on LinkedIn, it’s likely many will want to connect with them. It’s important for support staff (an administrative assistant, head of PR, etc.) to establish an agreed upon set of rules for correspondence with the CEO. It’s likely that they will not want to limit who can reach out to them. To modify who can reach out to your CEO through LinkedIn, follow these steps:

  • Log into the CEO’s LinkedIn profile.
  • Go to the “Privacy & Settings” section by clicking on the small thumbnail photo of the CEO in the upper-right corner of LinkedIn, then clicking “Manage.”
  • Select “Communications.”
  • Look for the “Messages from Members” section and click “Change.”
  • Within this section, modify how LinkedIn members can reach out to your CEO following the rules agreed to.

2) Hiding Connections
Although many CEOs may be comfortable sharing who they’re connected to and letting everyone know it, many are not. Many CEOs consider their Rolodex as a private gold mine they wish to protect. For the CEO who fits this description, here’s how you can hide your LinkedIn connections for anyone from viewing:

  • Log into the CEO’s LinkedIn profile.
  • Go to the “Privacy & Settings” section by clicking on the small thumbnail photo of the CEO in the upper-right corner of LinkedIn, then clicking “Manage.”
  • Select “Privacy.”
  • Look for the “Who Can See Your Connections” section and click “Change.”
  • From the drop-down, select “Only You” if the CEO wished to hide visibility of his/her connections.
