How to ask for a LinkedIn recommendation

If you would like a recommendation from a customer or business associate, you should ask. You can ask your network connections to recommend your work with them, which can be added to your profile. Accepted recommendations include colleagues you’ve worked with, service providers you have hired to provide a service, and business partners.
If you are a financial adviser, the SEC Adviser’s Act Rule 206(4)-1 bans client testimonials in advertisements altogether. We recommend that investment advisers disable LinkedIn’s recommendation function. If you choose to enable the LinkedIn recommendation function, pay special attention to third-party content, as your recommenders may think they are doing you a favor by providing a high level of detail about an investment, product, or service. In reality, comments may trigger suitability, monitoring, and archiving violations.

3. Choose the recipient(s) and customize your message
Although LinkedIn allows you to message up to 200 recipients, you’ll get a more┬ápersonalized recommendation when you ask specific individuals you have a great relationship with. If you worked closely with a co-worker on a project, be sure to reference that project within the request. If a client achieved amazing results for their business as a result of your consulting engagement or partnership, ask them to share those publicly if they are able.
